City winters bring lingering snow between buildings and sidewalk salt spray. Here's the walk-around we do every spring.

Structural checks

• Look for loose or corroded fasteners, especially where the frame meets the house.
• Check for boards that cup, crack, or move underfoot.
• Inspect posts and footings for heaving or settlement.

Surface and finish

Sweep off debris and wash with a mild deck cleaner. If the finish looks thin or water no longer beads, schedule oiling or staining before summer sun accelerates drying.

When to call a builder

Any sagging, rot, or railing movement is worth a professional look. Small repairs done in spring prevent larger replacements in fall.
