Timing matters

Oil when the forecast is dry for 48 hours and temperatures stay above 50°F. Spring and early fall are ideal in Brooklyn. Midday sun can cause the oil to flash-dry before it soaks in.

Product choice

Use a penetrating hardwood oil labeled for IPE, not a deck stain or paint. Look for UV inhibitors and mildewcides. Transparent or lightly tinted formulas preserve the natural grain.

Application

• Clean the deck and let it dry completely.
• Apply with a brush or lamb's wool applicator, working with the grain.
• Wipe excess after 15 minutes to avoid tacky spots.
• Keep foot traffic off for 24 hours.
